The Journey of Growth
Saffron grows from corms, a type of bulb, planted in well-drained soil and exposed to plenty of sunlight. The corms are typically planted in late summer, and with proper care, they produce purple crocus flowers by early autumn. Saffron requires a dry, warm climate with minimal water during the summer dormancy period and regular watering in the fall to stimulate growth. Each corm will produce flowers yearly, multiplying underground to form new corms, enabling the saffron crop to expand naturally over time.
The Art of Harvest
Harvesting saffron is a delicate and labor intensive process that takes place each fall when the vibrant purple crocus flowers bloom. Each flower contains only three red stigmas, the precious saffron threads, which must be carefully handpicked to preserve their quality. Harvesters typically begin early in the morning, gently plucking the threads from each flower just after it opens, as this is when the saffron is at its most aromatic and vibrant. It takes thousands of flowers to produce just a single ounce of saffron, reflecting the dedication and skill involved in every harvest.
From Bloom to Treasure
After harvesting, saffron threads go through a drying process to intensify their flavor, color, and aroma. The fresh threads are carefully spread out and dried, often in low, controlled heat or sun-dried in some traditional methods. This step is crucial, as it preserves the saffron’s quality and enhances its shelf life. Once dried, the saffron is stored in airtight containers, protected from light and moisture to maintain its potency. Proper storage ensures the saffron retains its rich characteristics, ready for use in culinary, medicinal, or aromatic applications around the world.
